How We Work

At ITN, how we work is as important as what we do. Our values describe what you can expect when you work here — and what ITN expects of you.

Ambition – We set bold goals, take ownership, and keep learning. We look for new opportunities and better ways to make an impact.

Courage – We speak up with honesty and respect, challenge ideas constructively, and value open, direct communication.

Team – We collaborate, celebrate others’ successes, and make sure every voice is heard. We put the team’s success first.

We also recognise the importance of balance and wellbeing, so we welcome flexible working, part-time roles and job shares across all areas of ITN.

The Role

This is a key role at the heart of the GMB programme-making team, helping shape the stories our audience wakes up to.

As a Multi-Skilled Producer, you’ll be confident working across both newsgathering and story production, with the editorial judgement, creativity and drive to take ownership of a story from the first idea right through to transmission.

You’ll work in a fast-paced newsroom where no two days are the same, responding to breaking news as well as developing original, engaging content for the programme. While the role is primarily newsroom-based, there will also be occasional opportunities to work in the field.

This role incorporates both day and night shifts and, where required, may also step up to provide cover at Deputy Content Editor level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking ownership of programme items from initial idea through to transmission, including live guests, packages and graphics
  • Setting up and producing on-the-day stories, including breaking news
  • Finding and booking high-quality guests across a wide range of stories
  • Researching and developing original story ideas for broadcast
  • Writing detailed and accurate briefs for presenters and reporters
  • Writing scripts for programme intros, bulletins, headlines and trails
  • Sourcing and logging the best video, stills and other visual material
  • Researching and selecting archive footage
  • Video editing elements of packages, underlays, headlines and other programme content
  • Commissioning graphics from designers and creating graphics using established templates
  • Acting as a field producer, when required, on both planned and breaking news stories
  • Making sound and informed editorial and legal judgements
  • Understanding duty of care and dealing sensitively with contributors
  • Demonstrating a strong understanding of social media and how it can be used to find stories, contributors and content

These are the main requirements of the role and is not an exhaustive list of duties. It is intended to reflect the nature, range, and context of the work, which will change over time.

Key Requirements

  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across a busy programme-making team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, even when working at pace
  • Ability to prioritise, manage competing demands and deliver to tight deadlines
  • Excellent journalistic judgement and a strong knowledge of news and current affairs
  • Strong understanding of how to structure and produce a compelling TV news package
  • Ability to edit video confidently and to a high standard
  • Good understanding of television graphics, including writing effective graphics and working collaboratively with designers
  • Ability to write clear, concise and accurate broadcast news copy
  • Strong understanding of the GMB brand, its audience and tone of voice
  • Commitment to producing news and magazine content that reflects the diversity of communities across Britain
  • Good working knowledge of Ofcom regulations, the ITN Compliance Manual, relevant legal requirements, and health and safety considerations
  • Flexibility to work a mixture of day and night shifts
  • A full driving licence is desirable, but not essential

Our people are at the heart of everything we do at ITN. It’s vital that our workforce reflects the diversity of both our audience and the wider society in the UK, so we actively seek candidates from diverse backgrounds and communities. Reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process will be offered, if required, due to a disability or health condition. We also recognise the importance of a good work life balance, so we do everything we can to accommodate flexible working, including part-time and job shares for all our roles. Please just let us know in your application, or at any stage throughout the process, if this is something you want to explore.
