New Federal Theatre (NFT) is a small, nonprofit professional theatre company based in New York City, dedicated to producing work that reflects the diversity of the human experience and providing a launching pad for artists of color. For decades, NFT has been a vital home for playwrights, directors, and performers, and a cultural anchor for the communities it serves.
The Opportunity
New Federal Theatre is seeking a General Manager to lead the day-to-day administrative, financial, and operational functions of the company. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a small-team, mission-driven environment and wants to grow with the organization. The General Manager will work closely with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors, and is expected to advance into the role of Managing Director as the position and the organization develop.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily administrative and business operations of the theatre
- Manage organizational budgets, cash flow, and financial reporting in partnership with the bookkeeper/accountant
- Negotiate and manage contracts with artists, vendors, and unions (e.g., Actors' Equity, SDC)
- Support fundraising efforts, including grant tracking, donor records, and reporting deadlines
- Coordinate production logistics, scheduling, and venue relationships
- Supervise administrative and part-time staff; support human resources functions
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulatory, insurance, and reporting requirements
- Serve as a key liaison to the Board of Directors, preparing materials and attending meetings as needed
- Partner with the Artistic Director on strategic and season planning
Qualifications
- 3-5+ years of arts administration, nonprofit management, or general management experience (theatre experience strongly preferred)
- Strong financial and budget management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized, self-directed, and comfortable wearing multiple hats in a small-team setting
- Familiarity with nonprofit fundraising and grant processes a plus
- Genuine interest in and commitment to NFT's mission
Growth Path
This position is structured as a growth role. The General Manager will be mentored toward, and is expected to advance into, the Managing Director position, taking on expanded strategic, financial, and organizational leadership responsibilities over time.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $75,000-$85,000, commensurate with experience.
