Essential Job Functions

Sets up meetings with clients, vendors, resource providers, colleagues, and supervisors.

Solicits creative input with clients, colleagues, and supervisors.

Solicits content and reviews evaluations from subject matter experts, clients, trainers, colleagues and supervisors to create or edit training, recruitment, and informational media.

Analyzes scripts/treatments containing complicated subject matter to determine the effective presentation of ideas considering clarity, effect, credibility, audience, and desired emotional impact.

Determines the most effective format, approach, content, and level of presentation to meet training, recruitment, and educational objectives, time restrictions, and budget.

Converts production ideas into finished production scripts by working with subject matter experts and clients, preparing outlines and storyboards to illustrate the action, developing shot lists, and writing dialog.

Plans and schedules productions.

Identifies and acquires cast, crew, sets, props, wardrobe, equipment, and other assets for productions.

Conducts site surveys for fit and shooting logistics.

Secures permits, consents, and releases to meet the legal requirements for recording persons and places.

Directs and assists staff with fabrication of sets, props, and wardrobe, as needed.

Directs the activities of the production crew, equipment, and cast in the studio and on location by guiding performances and determining the placement and movements of performers, crew members, lights, cameras, microphones, props, and sets.

Directs the production of a wide variety of other-than-video media materials from inception to final product, including still photographs, recordings, graphics, printed material, and instructional material.

Studies and recommends solutions to problems affecting multi-media productions, such as budgeting, scheduling, cost effectiveness, equipment, and deadline issues.

Develops animation for informational, recruitment, and training media.

Operates broadcast-quality audio and video equipment as a producer, director, editor, or crew member on presentations/projects produced by self or others to produce artistic and quality sound and pictures.

Operates both Windows and Mac operating systems with word processing, communication, database, graphics, video editing, and special effects software when reviewing and editing videos and graphics into a final product.

Operates and maintains a wide variety of audiovisual equipment, including still and video cameras, video recorders, audio mixers, lighting equipment, and computer-based applications.

Documents law enforcement events, such as Department functions, press conferences, search and rescue operations, training activities, and natural disasters.

Evaluates and recommends new electronic equipment, hardware, and software used for multi-media productions.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY

OPTION A: A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Instructional Communications Technology or similar field.

OPTION B: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in communications or a related field AND one year's experience within the last three years, writing, producing, and directing training or informational programs using broadcast level video technology used within the last three years.

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.


PHYSICAL CLASS

Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

  • To receive credit for the required degree, you MUST include a legible copy of the official degree, official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization at the time of filing, or by Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Documentation should be submitted to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org and indicate your name, the exam title, and exam number. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted to meet the education requirement. The document should show the date the degree was conferred and be in English; If proof of education is not in English, then translation is required. International degrees must be evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards if not listed in the International Handbook of Universities or World Higher Education Database. APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS BY TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2026, IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS EXAMINATION.


SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE

As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

APPLICANTS WHO RECEIVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION WILL BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

TESTING ACCOMMODATION

Please note, you will be contacted at a later time by a Sheriff's Department representative that will guide you through the process. You will be provided with an initial deadline to submit documentation. VETERAN'S CREDIT

If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org as soon as possible, so if you are eligible for veteran's credit, we can include it before the list is available.

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION

The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation.

The list of successful applicants created from this exam will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Executive Division, Sheriff's Information Bureau.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:

  • Use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.


Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.

AVAILABLE SHIFT: Any Shift

APPOINTEES MUST BE WILLING TO WORK ANY SHIFT, INCLUDING EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

WORK CONDITIONS
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department operates seven (7) days a week, 24-hours a day. Appointees MUST be willing and able to:

  • work flexible hours (evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays)
  • respond to call-outs 24 hours a day/seven (7) days a week, including weekends, and holidays
  • film inside correctional facilities
  • film in highly undesirable areas of Los Angeles County
  • come in contact with inmates while filming at correctional facilities
  • work long hours during production, when needed
