Job Summary/Description:

WEAU is looking for a creative and enthusiastic Assignment Editor to join our team. We are looking for a candidate who loves a quest for knowledge, who can put together a complex puzzle even when one piece is missing, and who wants to make the newsroom operations an important part of their career. The ideal candidate must be able to own breaking news logistics while having excellent news judgment. In addition, successful candidates must have an understanding of coverage on all platforms and are expected to help generate story ideas. Our Assignment Editors work in collaboration with our Newscast/Digital Producers and are trained to distribute content on all our platforms. If you have a passion for journalism, a knack for multitasking, and the flexibility to adapt.

Duties/Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead daily AM/PM news meetings.
  • Maintaining the daily planner in ENPS.
  • Maintain contact with various police, business, and government agencies.
  • Communicating daily coverage plans with Gray Media stations, network affiliates, and others.
  • Confirm breaking news and re-assign crews to cover.
  • Funnel confirmed information to producers during breaking news.
  • Posting content to the website.
  • Coordinating live shot assignments with photographers.
  • Assigning news stories to photographers.
  • Working with the newsroom management team to coordinate weekend news coverage.
  • Fulfilling regional/network content requests.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, overnights, and weekends.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Strong news judgment, ethics, and knowledge of legal standards are a must.
  • Must be extremely aggressive in pursuit of breaking news and verification of unconfirmed information.
  • Familiarity with the use of social media as news-gathering tools.
  • Excellent writing, grammar, and copy-editing skills.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working on a local TV news assignment desk is preferred.
