Book Production Manager, Large Print, Penguin Random House (Open to Remote)

Book Production at Penguin Random House seeks a hands-on and detail-oriented Production Manager who will handle the production and manufacturing of all large print titles published by Penguin Random House, reporting to the Vice President & Production Director. The Production Manager will manage a list of 150-175 large print titles per year.

These ancillary editions require fast process and efficiency to hold the same on-sale date as their regular edition counterparts while coordinating with multiple imprints.


This experienced Production Manager will be part of a fast-paced and collaborative group. You should have a hands-on understanding of 1/color trade paperback production and experience dealing with multiple vendors, including compositors and component printers. You’ll work closely with many colleagues in other departments across the company, especially Production, Production Editorial, Managing Editorial, and Art/Design. The role is ideal for someone who is highly organized, can handle multiple tasks at one time in a deadline-driven environment, and is interested in further managing the bookmaking process for fiction and nonfiction titles.

The Role:

  • Consulting with managing editorial, production editorial, art departments and production managers throughout the company to procure materials and maintain schedules.
  • Interact with Inventory, fulfillment, and transportation departments regarding delivery logistics.
  • Working closely with compositors to reset files to large print requirements.
  • Entering/updating book specs in SAP
  • Issuing purchase orders for each assigned title and approving necessary costs and invoices
  • Working closely with vendors, including compositors, component printers, and printer/binderies, with troubleshooting, schedules, and deliverables
  • Trafficking materials and proof passes internally as well with outside vendors
  • Ensuring quality benchmarks are maintained


The Essentials:

  • Minimum of 4 years of trade or academic book production publishing experience – large print experience a plus, but not required to succeed in the role
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Organization and scheduling skills and attention to detail
  • Thorough understanding of text composition and text and cover file preparation
  • Thorough understanding of both offset and digital printing processes
  • Good financial skills and understanding of P&Ls
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of SAP and FileMaker Pro a plus, but training is available if minimal to no experience with either application


The salary for this position is $70,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
