Job Description

The LA-based CBS Mornings Producer develops, writes, and oversees the editing of news of day and feature stories for the broadcast. The Producer will work under strict deadlines while coordinating closely with correspondents, editors, artists, and fellow producers to create a variety of thoughtful and compelling short-form packages and show segments for CBS Mornings.
This Producer will work mainly nighttime hours, seeing through their story or stories to air. In addition to “crashing” pieces, the Producer is encouraged to identify feature stories for longer-form packages to produce. To accommodate production of those stories, a shift to work dayside will be accommodated. However, most of the time, the Producer’s shift will start in the evening.
It is essential that this Producer is a quick-study, has a firm grasp on the daily news cycle and can craft a package in a timely fashion that hits all the necessary angles but still offers a unique take and a strong narrative, often character-driven, that sets Mornings' storytelling apart from its competition.

Basic Qualifications

  • Editorial Experience: At least 6 years of editorial production experience at either a national or local level for television or large digital outlets.
  • Multimedia Storytelling: Ability to craft compelling news segments using a combination of words, pictures, sound, and graphics.
  • Current Events Expertise: Possesses a strong command of current events and can put together well-developed story pitches tailored to fit the CBS Mornings show format.
  • News Judgment: Exhibits proven news judgment and a track record of optimally chasing breaking news, tracking developments, and discerning reportable information.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent writing skills with a focus on clear and effective communication, especially when managing sensitive stories.

Desired Qualifications

  • Editor Management: The Producer will need to have a full understanding of their editor’s responsibilities and the ability to “speak their language.” While the editor cuts, the Producer will be problem solving and always looking for creative solutions.
  • Newsroom Agility: Experience in a fast-paced newsroom environment is preferred, as well as the ability to take initiative, and work on their own from any location.
  • Video Production Skills: Producer is expected to have experience and proficiency in all aspects of the production workflow. Shooting video from the field is a desirable skill, but not necessary for this role.

Additional Information:

  • Schedule: Sunday-Thursday, during the afternoon/evening and alternate with overnight shifts (6pm-3am PT) monthly. Will occasionally be needed to produce early morning correspondent live shots (3am-6am PT).
  • Travel: May be needed to travel periodically for multiple days to cover both major breaking news, special events and feature stories.
  • Work Model: A hybrid work-from-home model will be considered for this position; however, the Producer will be responsible for developing familiarity with the newsroom, its staff, and crews.
