Assistant Producer, NYC Now

NYC Now, WNYC’s daily local podcast, delivers essential news and information to help make New York City work for the people who live here. The show is a dynamic blend of top headlines, smart interviews, and longform stories.

To help support daily production, we’re hiring an Assistant Producer. This audio journalist will play an important role in shaping the sound and direction of NYC Now. We’re looking for someone with strong editorial instincts who takes a deeply collaborative approach to their work. They are a self-starter who displays enthusiasm and creativity. They are sharply focused on audience needs. And they are passionate about New York City and the surrounding region.

This position reports to the Senior Producer of NYC Now and works closely with the show’s host.

Responsibilities

  • Support the daily production of NYC Now including gathering and editing audio, writing material for the host, and assembling episodes
  • Book, script and edit host interviews
  • Regularly pitch original story ideas
  • Identify Gothamist stories that could be adapted for NYC Now and contribute to shaping how they’re told in audio
  • Work with beat reporters and editors on a range of segments and projects
  • Participate in daily planning meetings
  • Help produce content for social media, including video and other visual assets
  • Produce in the field, as assigned
  • Take on other production tasks, as needed
  • Work an early shift to support production of the morning episode

Qualifications

  • At least one year of professional journalism experience
  • Experience editing audio (preferably in Pro Tools or Hindenburg)
  • Basic understanding of podcast production, structure, and tone
  • Some experience with video editing preferred (familiarity with Premiere Pro is a plus)
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken
  • Effective time management and ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
  • Deep commitment to ethical journalism
  • Experience using recording equipment
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to their work

Additional Information

This is a full-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $36.1854 per hour ($65,857 annualized at 35 hours per week).

This role operates in a hybrid capacity with the expectation that this individual will work at least part of the week in the WNYC Newsroom in Lower Manhattan.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.
