The Coordinator of Basketball Communications will work on the day-to-day operations, strategies and objectives of the Hornets basketball communications efforts. You will supervise the production of team’s game notes/statistical information, manage the team’s media monitoring efforts, manage the team’s credentialing process and oversee game night hospitality. This position will have the ability to generate storylines (especially through statistical information) and maintain positive relationships with media members. You should have a proactive mindset and be extremely detailed oriented.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the production of Hornets game notes and statistical information
  • Oversee the management of the team‘s media monitoring system, including the creation of reports and analysis
  • Manage team’s media credentialing process
  • Assist with basketball-related publicity efforts
  • Oversee the team’s game night set up and media hospitality
  • Assist with management and responsibilities of basketball communications department’s season Communications Associate
  • Develop relationships with members of the media, players and basketball staff
  • Oversee the production of team’s media, preseason and postseason guides
  • Develop potential story ideas and proactive media pitches incorporating Hornets players, coaches and basketball staff to various media outlets
  • Oversee team’s inventory for television broadcast in-game reads/drops
  • Write and edit press releases
  • Manage team’s media distribution lists
  • Manage the department’s Twitter account (@HornetsPR)
  • Supervise the team’s press clipping and archival system
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager

Required Skills, Experience and Abilities
To perform the job successfully, you should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in public relations, journalism or related field
  • Experience in athletic media relations/sports information preferred
  • Minimum of 1-2 years public relations/media relations experience
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people and develop strong relationships
  • Able to multi-task under time constraints, meet deadlines and work within a fast-paced industry/environment
  • Ability to develop relationships with members of the media, players and basketball staff
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work with departments across the organization
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented and demonstrate an ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communications skills – both written and verbal
  • Adobe InDesign experience preferred
  • A self-starter who is resourceful and is a team player
  • Ability to proactively pitch stories and develop storylines
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays
  • Ability to travel with team to games, training camps, summer league, etc. is required
