Arts & Entertainment Editor

Albany, NY, United States

Job Description

The Times Union is seeking an Arts & Entertainment Editor to oversee coverage in the core counties of the Capital Region as well as adjacent areas including the Berkshires and Catskill regions. We’re looking for someone who can stay on top of the upcoming events that matter — from arena acts to garage rock, MASS MoCA to scrappy neighborhood galleries, major novelists to underground comix — while keeping readers abreast of news from the cultural institutions, trends and personalities.

What you’ll do: Coordinate breaking news as well as brainstorming and nurturing longer-lead coverage; assign and edit stories from full-time staff reporters and a platoon of freelancers; and work with a talented digital team to make sure our cultural coverage is the best possible web product. You’ll be a main point of contact for major and minor creatives in the region and a gatekeeper to those lobbying for coverage.

In addition to handling daily developments on the cultural scene, the editor is responsible for content in two weekly print sections as well as special publications throughout the year.

We’re looking for a multi-platform journalist who’s a good communicator up and down the org chart and across the newsroom, and a candidate who understands the potential of cultural and “go-and-do” journalism to provide utility for all readers and draw in new audiences.

Who we are: The Times Union is an award-winning newspaper in upstate New York. While based in the Capital Region, we also cover the Hudson Valley and the Adirondacks region. We have a collegial, supportive newsroom. We're open to candidates no matter their race, color, gender, sexual preferences, or age.
