Assistant Editor (Lead AE) — Documentary Feature Film
Location: Remote, West Coast hours
Position Type: Part-Time, Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Project Dates: June 1, 2026 – June 2027
We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Lead Assistant Editor to join the post-production team for a documentary feature film. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and has a strong technical foundation paired with excellent storytelling instincts.
The Lead AE will work closely with the Post Production Supervisor, Director, Lead Editor, Archival Producer, and Production Management to support all aspects of the editorial workflow throughout post-production.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the documentary post-production workflow in a remote environment
- Organize, sync, group, and prep footage for editorial
- Handle multi-cam grouping and media management
- Prepare and deliver cuts for review and distribution, including occasional evening exports and uploads
- Maintain meticulous project organization, backups, and media tracking
- Work with archival footage, graphics, and various media formats
- Troubleshoot technical and workflow issues as they arise
- Prep media and project materials for online finishing
- Ensure consistency and organization across all editorial assets
- Collaborate closely with editorial and production teams to support evolving creative needs
Qualifications
- Prior experience as an Assistant Editor on documentary projects required
- Advanced proficiency in Avid Media Composer
- Strong understanding of remote post-production workflows
- Experience handling archival footage and mixed media formats
- Knowledge of post-production pipelines from ingest through online prep
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a remote environment
- Creative instincts and a strong sense of story
- Ability to manage shifting priorities and varying weekly workloads
Additional Details
- Remote position; candidates must be comfortable working independently and communicating proactively
- Some weeks will require additional hours, particularly following shoots or during active cut reviews
- Occasional evening work will be required for exporting and distributing cuts
- Use of company-provided equipment is required
Compensation
- Hourly, non-exempt position $400/10hr day
- Part-time schedule with fluctuating hours depending on production needs
