Job Description
About Hard Carry Media
Hard Carry Media is a next-generation media company building digital-first brands for Gen Z and Gen Alpha. We create, produce, and monetize original content across YouTube, social, premium streaming, live experiences, and brand partnerships — with a portfolio spanning creator-led channels, original formats, sports and entertainment ventures, and partnerships with some of the biggest names in culture.
The Role
We're hiring a Controller to own the financial backbone of the company.
This is first and foremost an accounting leadership role: you'll run the monthly close, manage cash, keep the books clean across multiple entities and productions, and make sure leadership always knows exactly where the business stands. You'll work directly with the CEO and leadership team, plus our external accountants, payroll providers, and legal partners.
The right candidate is rigorous about the fundamentals but isn't just a scorekeeper — over time, you'll also help with budgeting, forecasting, and the financial analysis behind new ventures and partnerships. You'll build the finance function of a fast-growing media company from the ground up.
What You'll Own
Accounting & Financial Operations (core of the role)
– Run the monthly close and produce accurate, on-time financial statements
– Own the general ledger and chart of accounts across multiple entities and productions
– Manage AP, AR, payroll vendors, and expense workflows
– Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and production spend
– Maintain rolling cash flow visibility for leadership
– Coordinate with external tax and audit partners
– Enforce financial controls and company spending policies
Budgeting & Reporting
– Build and maintain annual budgets with department leaders
– Track performance by channel, show, production, and business unit
– Standardize financial reporting across the company
– Prepare financials for board meetings and investor discussions
Strategic Finance (grow into it)
– Support revenue forecasting across content, sponsorship, licensing, and commerce
– Build models for new ventures, partnerships, and investments
– Evaluate vendor agreements and surface cost-saving opportunities
What We're Looking For
– 5+ years in accounting, controllership, or finance — you've owned a close before
– Strong command of GAAP
– Advanced Excel / Google Sheets skills
– Experience managing cash flow forecasting and multi-entity books
– Self-directed and comfortable in a fast-moving environment
– Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field
Bonus points for:
– CPA or CPA-track
– Media, entertainment, creator economy, or production experience
– Venture-backed or high-growth company experience
– QuickBooks, Bill.com, Ramp, or Expensify
– Production accounting and content budgeting familiarity
What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)
– Monthly closes are accurate and on time
– Leadership has clear, current visibility into cash position and forecast
– Department budgets are organized and trackable
– Reporting is standardized company-wide
Compensation & Benefits
– Salary range: $130,000–$170,000, based on experience
– Performance bonus
– Health benefits
– Flexible hybrid schedule in LA
– Real growth path as the company scales
Why Join
We're building a modern media company that combines creator talent, original IP, premium production, and digital distribution under one roof. You'll sit next to executive leadership, have real influence on how the business runs, and build a finance function — not inherit one.
