Job Description
The A.V. Club is seeking an experienced Film Critic to join our team of trenchant writers and editors. This role is ideal for a culture journalist with a strong point of view and purposeful ideas about expanding coverage in a way that aligns with A.V. Club voice and its readership. The successful candidate has experience writing astute film analysis in the form of reviews, observational pieces, responsive essays, and long-form features. You are always seeking to push forward the pop culture conversation, whether you're covering an auteur's passion project or a summer tentpole. You understand that curiosity is just as important as expertise, and you're eager to help expand our audience's understanding of the films of the present and past. You have a knack for homing in on the overlooked elements of the biggest pop culture stories of the moment, but can zoom out to take the bird's-eye view of more expansive topics, like the state of the film industry. You know that truly appreciating movies means taking a warts-and-all approach—assessing their strengths and flaws, and never mindlessly cheerleading. This is a full-time position with benefits, working with the Film Editor and reporting to the Editor-In-Chief. Key responsibilities Qualifications While this is a remote job, you’ll be expected to be legally able to work in the U.S. on an agreed-upon schedule covering East Coast newsroom hours. To apply, send a resume and cover letter, including clips that best represent your work, to jobs@avclub.com with "Film Critic" in the subject line. The A.V. Club is part of Paste Media, which is committed to building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and everyone is encouraged to apply.
