Role Description

This is an internship role for the Summer 2026 and Fall 2026 terms at Make Room Gallery, located on-site in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. As a Gallery Intern, you will assist with daily operations, event coordination, exhibition setup, and administrative tasks. Responsibilities include liaising with artists and visitors, maintaining the gallery space, writing and editing exhibition labels or press materials, supporting marketing initiatives, and aiding with client communications. This role provides hands-on experience in the inner workings of a contemporary art gallery and the opportunity to connect with influential voices in the art world.

Eligibility

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  • Must be studying a field related to art, art history, museum studies, or a related field.
  • Must be able to provide proof of eligibility for academic credit through their educational institution.

Main Responsibilities

  • Providing exhibition and communication support to the owner and gallery associates.
  • Creating packages of relevant materials to accompany sales offers.
  • Assisting as press and media liaison, organizing mailings and publicity associated with gallery activities.
  • Performing research projects relating to available artworks and upcoming exhibitions.
  • Scanning, formatting, and maintaining the physical and digital press archive.
  • Assisting with upcoming openings and events, as well as general support during exhibitions.

Ideal Candidate Characteristics and Skills

  • Reliable, friendly, curious, and dedicated.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Experience with management databases is a plus.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including excellent email manners.
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, basic knowledge of Photoshop, Canva and InDesign).
  • Diverse administrative & research ability.
  • Interest in contemporary art and intersectionality.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with exceptional judgment and discretion.
  • Flexibility for additional hours based on the needs of the gallery.
  • Knowledge in Chinese or Korean is a plus, but not required.

This is an unpaid internship, but Make Room will provide:

  • Course Credits: Academic credit for participation, subject to approval by the educational institution and upon completion
  • Letter of recommendation (if needed)
  • Proof of internship (if needed)

Make Room's internship program complies with California labor laws governing unpaid internships. The program has been designed to provide training that is similar to that given in an educational environment, is for the benefit of the intern, and does not displace regular employees.

The intern will work under close supervision and mentorship. Participation in this internship does not necessarily lead to employment at the conclusion of the internship.

This internship is unpaid, and we are only accepting interns for college course credit.
