Job Description
The Following Films · Phoenix, AZ (remote-friendly development phase)
Only Love is a $3.5M hybrid union prestige drama targeting Venice 2027 — a raw, unflinching love story set on the streets of Phoenix, drawn from direct lived experience. We are in active packaging and capital raise. We need a creative collaborator who wants to get their hands into the material and grow with the project.
The roleThis is a creative development role working directly with the writer-director. The primary focus is the script and the creative package — helping develop the material to its fullest potential and supporting the presentation of that material to collaborators, producers, and the industry at large.
This is not a production assistant role and it is not an administrative role. It is a creative seat at the table for someone who has strong instincts, a genuine relationship with cinema, and the kind of drive that makes deferred compensation feel like a fair trade for the experience and the credits.
For the right person, this role has a clear path to an Associate Producer credit on the film during principal photography. That transition is not guaranteed — it is earned.
What you will work on- Script development — close reading, notes, continuity, and character consistency across drafts in collaboration with the director
- Creative package development — supporting the evolution of the director's package including lookbook, director's statement, and visual references
- Research — thematic, contextual, and visual research that feeds the creative world of the film
- Comp and market analysis — helping articulate where Only Love sits relative to comparable films in tone, audience, and festival positioning
- Creative communications — drafting and refining how the project is described and positioned in outreach to collaborators, producers, and press
Someone early in their career who is serious about it. You watch films the way other people read — actively, critically, with an opinion. You know the difference between Moonlight and a film that wants to be Moonlight. You have something to say about material and are not afraid to say it to the person who wrote it.
The deferred structure means this role is best suited to someone who can sustain themselves independently while working part-time on this project — a recent graduate, a working creative in an adjacent field, or someone who has been waiting for the right first film credit and understands that on a project targeting Venice, that credit carries real weight. Ideally, the right person will be someone with a hunger for the film, looking for the cross section between meaningful and prestigious project.
QualificationsRequired
- Genuine fluency in independent and prestige cinema — you can speak about it with specificity, not just enthusiasm
- Strong written communication — you can articulate creative ideas clearly and concisely
- Comfort working directly with a writer-director on live material — this requires honesty, tact, and conviction in equal measure
- Self-directed — you can take a brief and return something useful without being managed through it
Preferred
- Background in film studies, screenwriting, literature, or a related creative field
- Some prior experience in development, production, or a creative agency context — even informal
- Familiarity with social realist cinema and the prestige indie landscape — the comps for this film are Moonlight, The Florida Project, and Nomadland
