Job Description
The Special Projects Producer is responsible for identifying, developing, and producing community events with the potential for media production and broadcast and/or digital distribution. This role serves as a bridge between Southern Arizona communities, stakeholders, and AZPM, ensuring that important events, local stories, cultural moments, and public affairs discussions are brought to a broader audience through high-quality content and participant experiences. The Special Projects Producer will have demonstrated abilities producing for multiple platforms (broadcast; radio; digital; social media; podcasts) and demonstrates a passion for local storytelling).
This role requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by event schedules, ensuring full coverage of community-focused productions and the ability to travel to attend meetings, events, and productions throughout Southern Arizona. It also requires a willingness to drive UA/AZPM vehicles and transport talent, guests, and equipment to support production needs.

- Work with AZPM leadership to identify best topics/projects for consideration and, ultimately, public and media presentation.
- Research, identify, and support events, initiatives, and conversations that align with AZPM’s mission and strategic intent and that have potential for broader distribution.
- Research, develop, write scripts and project rundowns, serving as coordinating producer for special projects and developing and overseeing the production of special projects, including live and recorded events, town halls, panel discussions, and cultural programs.
- Produce AZPM projects that media platforms include but not be limited to: broadcast TV; digital; radio; podcasts. Some productions might be created for the Southern Arizona market and other times, AZPM projects could be produced with an eye for national distribution.
- Cultivate relationships with organizations, thought leaders, and industry and cultural institutions to stay informed on relevant issues and event opportunities, and serve as AZPM’s liaison to coordinate and support national, regional, and local conferences and training opportunities.
- Coordinate logistical planning and production details, including securing talent, venues, technical requirements, and event and production staffing.
- Work closely with content, news, production, and marketing teams to adapt live events into engaging media content for broadcast, streaming, and social media distribution and ensure high production quality by collaborating with technical staff, including audio engineers, videographers, and digital content staff.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources efficiently to meet deadlines and strategic goals. Evaluate the impact and success of projects through audience metrics, community feedback, and media reach.
- Represent the organization at community meetings, industry conferences, and public events to foster strong partnerships and audience engagement.
- Work independently and deliver high-quality work product, consistently and on deadline, that is accurate, fair, balanced, and professional.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):
- Comfortable working in both office and field production environments, adapting seamlessly to different settings.
- Strong editorial judgment with the ability to identify compelling stories and community-driven content opportunities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders, including AZPM’s production and marketing staff, to develop and deliver impactful projects.
- Demonstrated ability to create and execute multi-platform content strategies, including for television, radio, digital media, and social media.
- Outstanding project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift/move/transport up to 25 lbs.

- Bachelor's degree in journalism, media production, communications, or a related field OR equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in journalism or broadcast production, and live event production.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating technical teams, securing venues, and overseeing production logistics for live or recorded events.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish, enabling broader community engagement and storytelling.
- Strong experience with media production tools, including audio/video editing software and content management systems.
- Proven experience producing for multiple platforms, including broadcast, radio, digital media, social media, and podcasts.
