The Opportunity
Under the general supervision of the Scene Shop Supervisor, constructs and produces sets, environments and fixtures that best support the on-air image, presentation, and sales of individual product, as well as maintain the style of QVC. This includes care and maintenance of all visual scenic assets (props, furniture, fixtures, etc.) associated with QVC’s live and streamed visual and broadcast productions. In addition, the production artisan is responsible for developing QVC assets from as early on as concept of the design, through completion and installation of the asset. The production artisan is responsible to make decisions regarding efficient and safe repair of maintenance of assets as well as decisions in fabrication of new elements. You will be responsible for the development of relationships with our cross-functional departmental teams, as well as occasionally external vendors. Individuals in this position are accountable to make independent decisions ensuring that QVC’s visual/scenic assets are in accordance with QVC’s high production and safety standards. The production artisan is responsible for completion of projects in a timely matter in QVC’s fast paced studio environment. Individuals in this position have the authority and responsibility to operate in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. In addition to the daily scene shop production artisan duties, the Senior Production Artisan is the scene shop floor liaison between the production artisan team and the scene shop supervisor. The Senior production artisan will be able to answer on the floor questions as well be able to retrieve an answer should they not know it at the time in a timely manner. The senior production artisan has the authority to field on the spot requests as they come into the shop for live show needs as well as being responsible to relay any and all information back to the scene shop supervisor to keep them in the know of daily activities.
The shift for this position will be Wednesday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.
Your Impact
  • Constructs scenery utilizing a variety of construction techniques and materials, including, but not limited to, working in wood, steel, aluminum, plastics, plexiglass, foams (polyurethane, polystyrene, extruded, etc.), laminates and composites.
  • Paints scenery utilizing a variety of scene painting techniques and materials that are common to the industry.
  • Handles load-ins and strikes of stock scenery for custom proprietary shows and special event broadcasts. This includes but is not limited to, assembly and disassembly of sets and rigging, scenic painting.
  • Development of TIG and MIG welding skills
  • Insures that the shop is properly supplied by notifying supervisor of needed supplies such as hardware, lumber, etc.
  • Responsible for effective repair & maintenance of scenic assets and minor set maintenance. Including but not limited to daily set walk throughs.
  • Assist with the design and production of specialty scenic assets (props, furniture and fixtures)
  • Organizes and maintains warehouse of sets and furniture, including repair of sets and furniture. Also inventory control as new sets come in and old are discarded.
  • Handles sign production utilizing the Gerber Edge equipment with Illustrator and Gerber software.
  • Use of CNC routing software and hardware for construction purposes.
  • Use of 3D printing software and hardware.
  • The point person for the team’s immediate questions on the floor.
  • Guide the team through sudden priority changes as they take place in the moment on the floor (ie: sudden live show request to hot switch large set pieces).
  • Responsible for overseeing and maintaining standards in our building practices.
  • You will be the main point person on the floor for both new employees training, and interns.
  • You will be the voice for the shop when negotiating finishes and “expert opinions” on creative designs.
  • You will be a point of information for the Supervisor of all safety concerns or needs on the shop floor.
What You Bring
  • 3+ years of set construction, technical or design experience in television, theatrical or entertainment lighting
  • High school diploma, vocational degree, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to read and construct from blueprints and floor plans required.
  • Experience in mechanical repairs and maintenance required.
  • Experience with Wood, Plastic and Metal fabrication, painting techniques, fabric and vinyl.
  • Basic Computer skills include Microsoft Suite, and AutoCAD2021. Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop experience is a plus.
  • CNC, vinyl cutting and printing, and 3D printing experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in carpentry, painting and the assembly and rigging of scenery required.
