The Department of Screenwriting at LMU's School of Film and Television is searching for an accomplished screenwriter/educator with extensive professional experience to join our faculty.This is a full-time, tenure-track position with competitive salary and benefits. The appointment would begin August 15, 2026.
Degree and Teaching Experience : MFA or terminal degree in Screenwriting or a closely related field required. Interested applicants should have a minimum of three plus (3+) years of university level teaching experience.
The successful candidate should have experience working in the industry (Hollywood,Independent, or International) and should have significant credits/experience in writing on at least two of the following platforms:
- Domestic or global feature films
- Cable or network television series
- Streaming or digital/new media
The successful hire will teach courses in Screenwriting with a focus on developing and writing TV pilots, both drama and comedy and/or long form feature scripts. One or more of the following sub-specialty skill sets are critical for the position:
- Adaptation , the process of adapting existing intellectual property to both film and television formats. Understanding how to secure IP, develop it, and determine whether a traditional or emerging format is best suited for the material.
- Writerpreneurship , the ability to apply fundamental writing skills to new and emerging platforms, create new outlets for a writer as a writer, and understand the market in order to create it.
- Writing for New Media , the process of writing for digital, interactive platforms (gaming, AR/VR, social media, podcasting, webtoons/anime etc.) to inform the writing process and prepare writers to stay current with innovation in entertainment.
The successful hire will be expected to 1) provide a high level of professional teaching and engage in the transition of students into the entertainment industry by recruiting mentors and participating in our professional transition programs, 2) serve on committees and as academic advisors, both at the department and university-level in accordance with tenure-line and departmental leadership standards, and 3) challenge themselves, their students, and their colleagues to be actively anti-racist and work towards greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the profession.
Leadership qualities and interest in leadership positions are key factors in this search to uphold the infrastructure and stability of our department. A tenure-line position requires deep commitment to service, an interest in the intricacies of higher education, and a specific requirement of future leadership as Department Chair and/or Graduate Director.
