Overview:

Would you like to be a leader in a multiplatform news operation with a commitment to excellence and the resources you need to succeed? WRAL is seeking a strong Senior Producer to work alongside the Executive Producer overseeing content, showcasing and innovation in WRAL’s morning newscast.

The Senior Producer will work closely with our newscast producers, digital producers, promotions and news management teams and must own weather and breaking news on all platforms. We are looking for a seasoned news producer with strong ethics, outstanding communication skills, superb news judgment and a desire to win.

This morning Senior Producer position works overnight hours, mainly on a Monday-Friday schedule. This is a position that requires work on some weekends and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Breaking News and Weather Coverage Across Platforms
    Take charge of real-time decision-making and execution for breaking news and weather events, ensuring timely, accurate, and engaging coverage across broadcast, digital, and social platforms.
  • Mentor and Develop Producing and Reporting Staff
    Serve as a mentor and leader for newscast and digital producers, offering ongoing feedback, training, and coaching to elevate the quality and consistency of storytelling and production.
  • Drive Editorial Decision-Making
    Collaborate with the Executive Producer to set the editorial tone and direction for the morning newscast, vet story pitches, assign content, and ensure alignment with newsroom goals and standards.
  • Plan and Execute High-Impact Newscasts
    Partner with producers to build well-structured, fast-paced, and viewer-centric newscasts. Ensure each newscast reflects strong editorial judgment, thoughtful story flow, and compelling visuals.
  • Champion Innovation and Visual Storytelling
    Encourage the use of creative production techniques, graphics, and innovative showcasing methods to enhance storytelling in newscasts and live reports.
  • Script Writing and Approval
    Write, edit, and approve copy for newscasts, ensuring scripts meet journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, and clarity. Guide staff in refining their writing for broadcast and digital.
  • Oversee Digital Content and Alerts
    Review and approve digital stories, headlines, and push notifications to maintain consistency, accuracy, and urgency across platforms. Ensure digital elements complement on-air content.
  • Participate in Weekend and Holiday On-Call Duties
    Rotate as part of the weekend and holiday on-call team to support producers and manage urgent news needs outside regular working hours.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Two years of experience in producing newscasts is preferred.
  • A four-year college degree is preferred.
  • Exceptional news judgment and editorial skills.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in news production software and newsroom systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Background in breaking news or live event coverage.

  • Tight deadlines and breaking news situations may necessitate extended hours and quick turnaround times.
  • Fast-paced, high-pressure environment, especially during live broadcasts and breaking news events.
  • Must be able to multitask, manage last-minute script changes, and adapt quickly to technical or editorial adjustments.
  • Regular interaction with anchors, reporters, directors, and digital media teams.
  • May require remote collaboration with contributors, guests, and content partners.
