About the Project

Rooted in the ancestral homelands of the Coast Miwok people, the Indigenous Heritage Storytelling Project is a community art and education initiative designed to preserve, celebrate, and share the living cultures of Northern California’s Indigenous peoples (including Miwok, Pomo, Ohlone, Patwin, and Wappo communities) through multimedia storytelling.

Supported by the Pirkle Jones Fund through Marin Community Foundation, this project will culminate in a 23-28 minute documentary film, “The Land Still Speaks” intended for public screening and educational use.

Position Overview

The Post-Production Sound Editor & Mixer will collaborate with the MAI production team, chiefly the Creative Producer/Field Producer/Film Lead to elevate the documentary’s audio quality through dialogue cleanup, sound editing, sound effects support, and final mix. The picture will be largely locked at the start of this contract.

This role is focused specifically on sound post-production and does not include picture editing.

Scope of Work

Responsibilities include:

Dialogue cleanup and audio restoration (noise reduction, clarity, consistency)
Editing and balancing interview audio and ambient sound
Adding and shaping sound effects where appropriate
Creating a cohesive, professional stereo mix suitable for exhibition and online viewing
Collaborating with MAI Production Team to integrate feedback within the project timeline

Deliverables

Final mixed stereo audio synced to picture
Delivery of final audio files in agreed-upon formats suitable for screening and distribution
Optional stems or alternate mixes, if requested and agreed upon in advance

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in post-production sound editing and mixing for film or documentary
Proficiency with professional audio software and workflows
Ability to deliver high-quality results within a short, deadline-driven production window
Respect for and sensitivity to Indigenous communities, stories, and cultural knowledge

Contract & Payment

This is a short-term independent contractor position. Compensation is a flat fee of $1,000, payable upon contract signing.
