Job Description
The Detox Dudes is hiring a Videographer to level up our content. We do holistic health coaching for people who've been failed by every other route. We're growing fast enough that Josh now needs someone with a camera next to him most weeks.
Eventually that's a full-time role. Base $8,000/month, travel covered, worldwide.
But we're not hiring straight into it.
We're running paid trial projects with a handful of videographers, and we'll offer the full-time seat to whoever it's obviously right for. No interviews-as-theatre, no six-week hiring process. You do real work, you get paid for it, and both sides find out fast.
What you will do:
You'd be filming Josh. In his house, in his office, at retreats, at ceremonies, on the road.
Courses. Podcasts. YouTube. Reels. Adventure footage. Long-form and short-form edits.
A big chunk of it becomes paid ad creative. We run cold traffic on Meta every day, and the volume of creative we can test is currently one of the main things capping how fast we grow. Whoever takes this seat has a direct hand in that.
And a fair bit of "hey, can you come over — I'm making this health concoction, let's shoot ten reels."
There is a lot of travel. Three trips are already booked in the next three months, and whoever's in this seat comes along.
Anyone can operate a camera. Two things matter more than that here.
Must have number one:
We need you to have experience shooting ads.
Almost everything you shoot ends up as a reel, a short, or a paid ad running cold traffic on Meta. That is a specific craft and it is not the same as making beautiful videos.
You should know what a hook is and why the first two seconds decide everything. How retention works, how pattern interrupts work, why a cut lands or doesn't, how text-on-screen and captions and pacing change performance. You understand that an ad is a direct response asset with a job to do, that "it looks great" and "it converts" are different things — and that when they conflict, conversion wins.
If you've shot content that actually performed, organically or as paid creative, tell us the numbers. That's the part of your reel we care about most.
Must have number two:
You need to pull out the best in Josh (the Founder)
The best footage we've ever got hasn't come from a shot list. It's come from someone asking the right question at the right moment and then having the sense to keep rolling. We're looking for a storyteller and a creative partner — a mirror, someone who sparks the conversation rather than waiting for it.
So: you know when to dig, when to shut up and let it happen, and when to say "that was great, say it again but shorter."
Additional benefits:
You can direct. Josh should be better on camera because you're the one behind it.
You can edit. Both the 40-minute podcast and the 30-second reel, and you understand they're different crafts.
You can build the room. Podcast setup, lighting, sound. Nothing falls apart because a lav died.
You care about this stuff. Health, transformation, actually feeling good in your body. You don't have to be deep in it already, but you have to want to be. If this is just a client to you, you'll be able to tell within a week and so will we.
Retreat experience is a big bonus. Knowing how to hold a camera in a space like that without wrecking it is a rare skill.
This isn't for you if:
- You shoot and hand off. This role is in the room, in the conversation, in the edit.
- Your background is all wedding, event, corporate or narrative work with no social or paid-ads experience. Beautiful footage nobody watches past second three is no use to us.
- You think optimising for performance is beneath you. We're a direct response business. The metrics are the point.
- You can't be in person in San Diego, or can't travel.
- A sober working environment doesn't suit you. Shoot days, trips, retreats and ceremonies are alcohol- and substance-free.
- You're only in it for the money.
Why are we doing it this way?
Honestly? Because hiring off a reel and a nice conversation doesn't work, and we've all been on both sides of that.
A trial project means you get paid to find out whether you like working with us before you rearrange your life for it. And we get to see the thing no interview reveals — what happens in the room.
If it's right, we'll both know quickly. If it's not, you got paid, you keep the work, and nobody wasted a quarter. We're also happy to keep working with people on a project basis even if the full-time seat goes to someone else. Good people are worth knowing.
Four stages. Everything after the application is paid.
1. Application + recording (loom)— Your work, plus three short written answers. Free, ~15 minutes.
2. Paid edit test — We send you a raw footage bundle. You cut one 60–90 second reel, briefed as a paid ad: audience, offer, and the job of stopping the scroll. Everyone gets the same footage. $250, remote, ~2 days.
3. Paid shoot day in San Diego — One day with Josh. Half structured, a set piece we actually need. Half unstructured, where you have to spark something. $750 plus travel and expenses, 1 day.
4. Paid project or trip — Two or three finalists run one real project: a course shoot, a trip, a retreat. Then we decide. Project rate, or $8k/month pro-rata, expenses covered.
- $8,000/month base (~$100k/year)
- Travel covered — and there's a lot of it
- Retreats, ceremonies, events, and the people you meet at them
- Working directly with Josh and the team, in person in San Diego
- The chance to make one mission much louder than it currently is
Send your loom or recording and answer three questions:
- Tell us about a time you got something out of someone on camera that they weren't planning to say.
- What's one piece of health or wellness content you've seen recently that you thought was genuinely good, and why?
- Send us something you shot that performed well as a reel or a paid ad, and tell us why you think it worked.

If your work fits, we'll get you on the phone with Josh quickly — and if that goes well, we'll get you shooting.
Detox Dudes is an equal opportunity employer. The trial stages are paid engagements; the full-time role is a W-2 position based in San Diego.
