TEGNA Inc. is seeking a Managing Editor for WBNS-TV, our CBS affiliate in Columbus, OH. This role is pivotal in guiding and leading our news gathering efforts daily. The Managing Editor will oversee a team of reporters, photojournalists, and assignment desk editors, ensuring that we discover, coordinate, and plan news coverage that is most relevant to our community. The ideal candidate will be an experienced journalist with a strong instinct for identifying urgent, impactful, and newsworthy stories. Collaboration with senior news managers, including the News Director, Assistant News Director and the Director of Digital is essential to align our content choices with brand strategy and ethical policies. In this role, the Managing Editor will be integral to all aspects of the newsgathering process, setting the tone for reporters to aggressively cover breaking news and consistently follow up on developing stories. The successful candidate will possess a news hound sensibility, a collaborative spirit, and excellent problem-solving skills. Impeccable organization and the ability to multitask and prioritize are crucial, as this is a demanding role that requires a calm demeanor under pressure and tight deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with reporters to ensure compelling storytelling across platforms.
  • In charge of newsroom readiness to respond to breaking news and weather events.
  • Supervises reporters and assignment editors.
  • Oversees the news planning process.
  • Ensures competitive content across dayparts, newscasts, and platforms.
  • Works closely with reporters and assignment desk on future assignments.
  • Conducts daily reporter script reviews.
  • Collaborates on newsroom projects, goals, and initiatives as necessary.
  • Creates, communicates, and executes big story and breaking news coverage.
  • Generates new angles and sidebar stories from lead stories.
  • Enforces assignment desk procedures to ensure the newsroom stays on top of coverage opportunities.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years of journalism experience.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in handling breaking news.
  • Management experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of best practices of assignment desk operations.
  • Strong editorial and news judgment.
  • Impeccable organizational skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Both a team player and a team leader.
  • Effective people and communication skills.
