The New York Philharmonic connects with millions of music lovers each season through live concerts in New York and around the world, as well as broadcasts, recordings, and education programs. After returning to a transformed David Geffen Hall in 2022, the Orchestra is acting on a renewed commitment to building on a legacy of more than 180 years, serving as a platform for today’s greatest musical artists and connecting with our communities. Gustavo Dudamel will become the Philharmonic’s Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director beginning at the start of the 2026-2027 season.
About The Role The New York Philharmonic seeks a visionary and collaborative Vice President, Artistic Planning. Working closely with the Music and Artistic Director and the President and CEO, this senior leader plays a central role in shaping the Philharmonic’s artistic vision and long-term strategic and artistic direction and serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
This role sits at the heart of the institution’s creative life, guiding artistic planning across repertoire, guest artist and conductor engagements, commissioning new works, and the identification of emerging talent. In addition, the Vice President, Artistic Planning, oversees the Philharmonic Archives and partners closely with musicians of the orchestra and colleagues across the organization to bring bold, relevant, and inspiring seasons to life.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY
- Lead all artistic planning and programming, including repertoire selection and the engagement of conductors, composers, solo artists, ensembles, and collaborators.
- Shape each season’s artistic vision while serving as a key contributor to season budgeting and long-range financial planning.
- Manage the New York Philharmonic’s long-term schedule, ensuring adherence to the Collective Bargaining Agreement on schedule matters.
- Cultivate strong relationships with artists, multidisciplinary creators, and identify and elevate underrepresented voices for the Philharmonic’s mainstage.
- Collaborate across the organization, including Education, Production, Marketing & Customer Experience, Orchestra Personnel, External Affairs, Philanthropy, and Finance to deliver cohesive, mission-aligned seasons.
- Partner with Development and Philanthropy to support fundraising initiatives connected to key artistic programming.
- Serve as the primary management liaison to orchestra musicians and the Artistic Advisory Committee.
- Represent the New York Philharmonic in public forums and cultivate global relationships with tour and residency partners.
- Lead and manage artistic staff, artist hospitality, and artist administration.
- Engage regularly with the Board, Advisory Councils, and key patron groups as a senior ambassador for artistic planning and season vision.
- At least 10 years of relevant experience as a senior artistic leader at a major orchestra or cultural institution.
- A natural collaborator, you bring people and ideas together to create innovative programs and projects.
- Demonstrated success and commitment to quality, innovation and diversity in artistic programming
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or relevant certification a plus.
- Proven track record in managing complex budgets in a disciplined and timely manner
- Strong communicator with experience translating strategy into practical, audience‑centered initiatives.
- A second language preferred but not required.
- Visionary and strategic , with a deep understanding of artistic programming and institutional leadership.
- Collaborative and trusted partner who builds strong relationships across artists, musicians, staff, and stakeholders.

- Credible and influential communicator able to engage artists, boards, funders, and public audiences.
